And so we approach the last week of term. A time when children are so exhausted the slightest sign of a bug leaves them pale and withdrawn, seeking the warmth and comfort of their sickbed. Teachers, too, fall fast and hard with end of term blues and illness not always alleviated by the golden glow of holiday hood, rising above the horizon. Still – mustn’t grumble. The plethora of pre-Christmas activities that you experience in a British secondary school don’t leave time for negative reflection and if you also have children of your own – it is a relentless hamster wheel of concerts, fetes and carols. The exhaustion and illness aside, Christmas remains a magical time for our youngsters and any celebration which encourages them to show consideration, selflessness and love has to be worthwhile – christian or not. Merry Christmas.
